Frequently Asked Questions
1) I just started Judo, what do I need?
First of all, congratulations. Judo is a wonderful sport. It is the foundation of almost all modern day martial arts. We recommend these items: A quality Single Weave Judo Gi, (uniform): Single Weave Gis are designed for every body type. Whether you have broad shoulders or a, “strong,” stomach muscle a Single Weave Gis is the way to go. In addition, you will also need a blue gi when you start to compete. A sturdy gym bag: You will be stuffing your gi and other things into this bag after each workout and you want it to last. A pair of slippers: They will keep your feet clean when you are off the mat (tatami.) Remember at some point your face will end up on that mat. A roll of athletic tape: This is a quick fix for boo boos, allowing you to get back on the mat. A water bottle: This will help keep you hydrated during class.
2) Does my child need an IJF Approved Gi?
Most likely, no. They will need a white and blue gi for competition. Most major brands are compliant with IJF rules. Only judoka, (judo student) who are competing at Juvenile B (Cadet) and IJF categories in international tournaments need IJF Approved Gi. Only Black belts need the IJF Approved logo. A rank Brown or lower may participate in international tournaments without the IJF logo on their belt. If you need an IJF Back Patch go to www.mybacknumber.com
3) Should I buy a Single Weave or a Double Weave?
The single weave Judo uniform is an economical choice for beginners and fast growing children. If you have several children in Judo then the double weave gi may be the way to go. You can always replace the pants with each child. Double weave gis are long lasting, durable and economical. If you take good care of your gi it will last for years.
